Mt. Fuji History Trekking
Overview
Mount Fuji has long held a special place in Japanese culture, symbolizing not just natural grandeur but also profound spiritual significance. Particularly during the Edo period (1603–1868), organizations known as "Fuji-kō" emerged, dedicated to the veneration of this sacred peak. Members of these groups undertook pilgrimages and ascetic practices, viewing the ascent of Mount Fuji as a path to spiritual enlightenment.
By embracing this historical context and approaching the climb in the traditional manner, modern-day climbers can experience a deeper sense of spiritual fulfillment and accomplishment. This activity offers not merely a physical challenge but a journey into the heart of Japan's cultural and spiritual heritage. Through understanding and participating in these time-honored practices, the ascent transforms from a mere climb into a profound voyage of self-discovery and personal growth.

Gateway to Mount Fuji Worship
Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine
At the base of Mount Fuji stands a shrine that has long served as the sacred gateway to the Yoshida Trail, the historic starting point for ascents up the revered peak. During the Edo period (1603–1868), devotees of the Fuji-ko faith—a popular movement dedicated to the worship of Mount Fuji—would commence their pilgrimages here, seeking spiritual purification and enlightenment. Embarking from this hallowed ground, pilgrims would undertake the ascent, viewing it not merely as a physical challenge but as a profound journey of the soul.

A mysterious cave
Funatsu Tainai Lava Tree Molds
When molten lava flows down a mountainside, it can engulf trees in its path. As the lava cools and solidifies, the incinerated trees leave behind hollow cavities known as lava tree molds. Some of these formations resemble the interior of the human body and have been revered as sacred sites called "Womb Caverns." Pilgrims once ventured into these depths, performing rituals known as "Tainai Meguri", seeking spiritual rebirth within the earth's embrace.

The Sacred Starting Point for Mount Fuji's Pilgrimage
Umagaeshi on the Yoshida Trail
At the elevation of 1,450 meters lies "Umagaeshi,(馬返し) " a point whose name literally means "horse return." Historically, travelers would leave their horses here and commence their ascent of Mount Fuji on foot. From this challenging juncture, climbers would steel themselves, embarking on the sacred journey up the revered mountain.

A sacred shrine that watches over the safety of climbers.
Suzuhara Shrine
Located at the first station of the Yoshida Trail, is a sacred site that vividly embodies the history of Mount Fuji worship. Historically, devotees of the Fuji-ko faith visited this shrine to pray for a safe ascent. Even today, visitors can sense its profound historical significance. In our activity, The shrine serves as the final destination, offering participants an immersive experience into the rich history and spirituality of Mount Fuji climbing.
